The Dark Side of Quinze

From April 15th, 2010 to March 27th, 2011

The Dark Side of Quinze presents the works of the artist Quinze and pieces of his extensive collection of folk art.

Quinze is a folk artist who has been creating sculpted skits for several years. He chose to be known as Quinze for the following reasons: “Having a number for a name makes me feel more human. Simply because I chose the number 15, it was not imposed upon me like other numbers (…) all these games of hide-and-seek, anonymity, and changes of identity inspire me and make me more productive.” Although his subjects are from folk art, he is influenced by current and contemporary art. His works are sculpted out of wood and he uses the bright colours of folk art.

The exhibition showcases the works of Quinze along with his collection of folk art. In includes seven sets in as many scenes that show the influence and interrelation between his art and his passion for collecting. This can be seen, for example, in Quand l’atelier devient l’œuvre (When the Studio becomes the Work), a self-portrait skit in which Quinze is in his studio surrounded by miniatures of the works of folk art from his collection that he has reproduced.
